Data Manager supports two stages for the PowerStore resources protection: local snapshot stage and backup stage.
Perform local snapshot
You can add a local snapshot stage in the protection policy to create local snapshots of the PowerStore resources. The storage array data protection service will orchestrate the creation of local snapshots using the REST APIs, and the snapshot will be created for the volumes and volume groups on PowerStore. Concurrent snapshots on primary and replica PowerStore arrays are supported and can be managed from Data Manager.
Local snapshot protection use cases
- Local snapshot on primary storage array only—When you create a snapshot on the primary storage array using Data Manager, the copy is created in Data Manager for recovery. The replica storage array resources—replica volumes and volume groups—cannot be added to the protection policy. Only the primary storage array resources can be added to the protection policy.

- Local snapshot on primary and replica storage arrays—For high availability (HA) requirements, you can create the snapshot on both the primary and replica storage arrays. During the operation, the snapshot is created on the primary storage and synced to the replica storage array. Two snapshot copies are then available from the Data Manager UI for recovery.

Perform backup to Data Domain appliance
During backup to the Data Domain appliance, the snapshot for the volume and volume group is created and sent to the Data Domain appliance. The backup stage supports backing up the block volumes and volume groups from the primary PowerStore array and through the replica PowerStore array to the Data Domain appliance.
Backup to Data Domain appliance protection use cases
- Backup to Data Domain appliance through primary array—You can back up the snapshot data through the primary array that has connectivity to Data Domain appliance.

- Backup to Data Domain appliance through replica array—If the storage resources on the primary array have a replication configured to the replica array, you can choose to back up the snapshot data through the replica array. During the backup, the snapshot is created on the primary array, moved to the replica array, and then backed up to Data Domain appliance.
