Public and private transportation environments pose challenging use cases for computer vision. Whether moving people or goods, transportation environments are in constant motion while simultaneously requiring real-time situational awareness based on analyzing many different data points. Our goal as technology and business thought leaders is to show that when designed and implemented well, computer vision with AI can reshape the transportation industry at every level, from improving the passenger experience to preemptive fleet maintenance to fuel optimization.
Transportation organizations, like most customers regardless of industry, are not inherently interested in just the details of a new technology like AI alone. They are instead interested in delivering one (or more) of the following outcomes that benefit their customers and stakeholders:
- Increasing operational efficiency
- Strengthening safety and security
- Enhancing the people experience
- Improving sustainability
- Generating new revenue opportunities
There are many new AI-based computer vision solutions available in the market. This creates more uncertainty when designing a comprehensive, distributed computer vision (CV) and video management system (VMS) solution for large transportation environments. Most implementations will include products from multiple vendors that can result in a potentially costly integration project before operations can begin.
Dell Technologies is pioneering a new fully integrated solutions approach that reduces the risk of innovation compared to working with many different narrowly focused technologies that have never been tested together. Our process for solutions development starts with understanding what business value outcomes the enterprise needs based on the end user's voice and our thought leadership. We then work with industry-leading providers of software and hardware components to design and test a complete solution.
This approach to developing enterprise-scale computer vision solutions has produced recommendations for the design of several options for comprehensive base platforms. We then show how these platforms are capable of hosting multiple applications from best-of-breed software partners, ingesting large volumes of visual data, and providing multiple insights to deliver some or all the business outcomes discussed above.
Our team has delivered a series of Dell Validated Designs for several vertical industries. We have also demonstrated how organizations can add enhanced workflows to reduce risk from cyber security attacks, increase image quality in harsh conditions, and include remote long-term retentions of video data that can be integrated with the core applications on a single platform.
Our platforms leverage market-leading components from Dell, Microsoft, VMware, Intel, and NVIDIA to host an integrated set of applications used every day by organizations from many industries worldwide on a single base platform. Additional documentation showing our approach's value is available on the Dell Technology Infohub information portal and listed in the References section.
This document describes the second release of the Dell Technologies Validated Design for Computer Vision for Public Transportation. This latest industry-specific solution focuses on the application of data management and AI computer vision outside a traditional data center including uses case on vehicles and at small terminals or depots. We also show how the information and data collected at the edge can flow seamlessly back to a central data center, hosting a common platform, to deliver additional insights and support more business outcome value.
The remainder of this paper describes how Dell Technologies, together with our market-leading partner EPIC iO Technologies (EPICiO) have designed an integrated solution called the Dell Technologies Validated Design for Computer Vision for Public Transportation that is:
- Easy to deploy
- Easy to operate
- Easy to grow
Organizations attempting to embrace change and innovation are often paralyzed by the 'art of the possible. It is not easy to know where to start when presented with a cornucopia of individual technologies that may or may not apply to their needs. At Dell Technologies, we can help address these unknowns. With our outcomes-based process, we can help define the workflows that map to the desired outcomes, test the solution at scale, and test it to fail. Customers will also reduce their risk by choosing a platform built with an ecosystem of industry-leading partners. Through validation, best practices, and sizing, we can help you accelerate innovation and realize better business outcomes.
