Introduction

  • We have found that, regardless of specific public transportation segment, most organizations are interested in delivering one (or more) of the following business outcomes when implementing computer vision (CV) and video management system (VMS) solutions:

    • Increasing operational effeciency
    • Strengthening safety and security
    • Enhacing the people experience -whether those people are customers, employees, constituents, or other stakeholders
    • Improving sustainability
    • Generating new revenue opportunities

    There are multiple solution options to choose from when designing an integrated computer vision (CV) and video management system (VMS) solution for large public transit ecosystems. Most implementations include products from multiple vendors plus a significant integration project effort before operations can even begin.

    Dell Technologies is pioneering a move away from narrow-scope technology and platform solutions. Our focus is on understanding which of the above business outcomes enterprises value and need based on end users' voice and our thought leadership. We then design a platform architecture that can support an integrated set of CV and VMS software applications that all work together with the hardware to achieve those outcomes.

    The following architecture diagram show the result of this approach being applied to developing enterprise-scale computer vision solutions. The Dell Technologies Validated Design for Computer Vision represented in the following figure is a universal platform capable of hosting multiple applications from vMS and CV software partners for solutions extending from edge to core to cloud.

    This platform successfully leverages market-leading components from Dell, VMware, Intel, and NVIDIA to host an integrated set of applications including video management, computer vision, and cyber security threat detection and remediation used every day by organizations from many industries worldwide.

    We have already delivered a series of validated designs for computer vision solutions demonstrating the value of this approach by integrating multiple applications and use case workflows on a common platform across several vertical industries.

    This document describes a new release of the Dell Technologies Validated Design for Computer Vision highlighting applications and workflows useful for public bus transportation scenarios. Our latest industry-tailored solution leverages the above universal platform to deliver multiple business outcomes with a single integrated solution of both hardware and software.

    The following logical architecture diagram shows the breadth of capability available from our software application partner, EPIC iO. We describe many of the details of EPIC iO's DeepInsights end-to-end solution along with our experience of validating some edge video analytics and data management.

    The remainder of this paper describes how Dell Technologies, together with our market-leading partner EPIC iO have designed an integrated solution built on the Dell Technologies Validated Design for Computer Vision that is:

    • Easy to deploy
    • Easy to operate
    • Easy to scale
