Major and minor release upgrades must be applied incrementally in sequential order unless otherwise indicated. For more information about supported upgrades and upgrade requirements, see Supported upgrade paths.
All necessary images, binaries, and version components needed for the upgrade are included in the upgrade bundle unless otherwise stated. The amount of time it takes to upgrade a cluster depends on the number of worker nodes installed at each site and the number of servers onboarded.
The upgrade process upgrades the version of all components in Bare Metal Orchestrator. These components include the RKE2 cluster, platform, sites, and custom resources. Examples of the components are included in the following table:
Component | Example |
RKE2 cluster | Global nodes and worker nodes |
Platform | Storage distributor and databases such as Postgres |
Sites | Global site and remote sites |
Custom resources and custom resource definitions (CRDs) | Server and site resources |
For a high-level workflow showing how the Bare Metal Orchestrator cluster is upgraded, see High-level upgrade workflow.
