This document details the architecture design, configuration, and implementation considerations when deploying a VMware Horizon 8 virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) with Dell EMC PowerEdge R6525 servers and a Dell EMC PowerStore 9000T model storage appliance. This document is server- and storage-focused and details the specific configurations of the system to achieve the results shown. The network and fabric that is used for connectivity are explored in detail.
The information in this document is based on the guidelines in the paper Dell EMC PowerStore: VMware vSphere Best Practices. This document includes supplemental information regarding VDI-specific details when running VMware Horizon 8.
As part of this reference architecture, the solution is tested using the industry-standard Login VSI VDI benchmarking tool. The performance results demonstrate the capabilities of PowerEdge R6525 servers for the VDI workload and a PowerStore 9000T model appliance for block and file storage. The scenario that is tested in this paper supports 2,500 Login VSI Knowledge Workers with sub-millisecond latency for the log in and steady state phases of the VDI life cycle.
