Meet the following prerequisites before implementing KVM on PowerMax. These prerequisites are high level as some tasks related to them are described in this guide.
- For file storage, a PowerMax system must be installed and configured with the File option (SDNAS). File storage runs as a highly available container on the array.
- For iSCSI, an interface module that supports Ethernet connectivity.
- For FC, and interface module that supports fibre channel connectivity.
- Dell servers with sufficient networking, memory, CPU, and storage to satisfy the requirements of a KVM shared storage cluster. Sizing varies greatly depending on the number of virtual machines needed and their purpose.
- If using FC, the servers require HBAs that are connected to the PowerMax.
- If using iSCSI, the servers need to communicate on the same network as the iSCSI interfaces on the PowerMax. In addition, the KVM hosts must be configured for iSCSI by installing the proper packages and configuring communication to the PowerMax.
- If using file storage, the servers will need to communicate on the same network as the file interfaces on the array.
- Licenses for PowerMax and the Enterprise Linux distribution, if applicable. If one employs Rocky as the Enterprise Linux OS, no additional licensing is required. If one employs Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a subscription is required. The oVirt node does not require licensing if the user selects Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
