A 64-bit environment is required for Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread) and higher versions. At least 250 GB of free disk space is required to check out the code and an additional 150 GB to build it. If you conduct multiple builds, additional space is required.
The Android build is routinely tested on Ubuntu LTS (14.04) and Debian. Most other distributions should have the required build tools available. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS was used for this document.
At least 16 GB of available RAM is required, but Google recommends 64 GB. For the purposes of this paper, three Dell R940 servers with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS were used for the benchmark and AOSP build – as shown in the Lab Environment below.
