A PowerEdge for VMware vSAN cluster can have as many as 64 nodes. The minimum number of nodes is three. When running SAP HANA in production on a PowerEdge for vSAN cluster a minimum of four nodes is recommended to avoid an availability and performance impact when nodes become unavailable—for example, during software upgrades (maintenance mode).
When sizing a PowerEdge for vSAN cluster for SAP HANA, consider having enough free resources (standby nodes) available for smooth upgrades or situations where VMware high availability (HA) must migrate VMs to available nodes if a vSAN Ready Node fails.
The following table shows the Dell SAP team’s sizing recommendations for a PowerEdge for vSAN cluster for SAP HANA:
Required number of vSAN Ready Nodes | Recommended number of standby nodes |
3–7 | 1 |
8–14 | 2 |
15–21 | 3 |
22–28 | 4 |
29–35 | 5 |
36–42 | 6 |
43–49 | 7 |
50–56 | 8 |
