Before installing, understand the expected environment requirements as per the E-Lab Interoperability Navigator and prepare the host system for a successful PowerPath installation.
Note: Ensure that the storage system logical devices support PowerPath. For more information, see the Host Connectivity Guide and the storage system support website.
To ensure a smooth and easy migration all the requirements that are listed in the PowerPath Migration Enabler administration guide needs to be met. Pre-installation and post-installation should be validated on the VM to ensure that the migrations are successful.
One virtual machine (VM) is created with the Oracle Linux 8.3 operating system installed on it. This VM is configured with datastores that are surrounded to the PowerFlex volumes. PowerFlex SDC is installed on the virtual machine to communicate and use PowerFlex-based storage volumes that are provisioned by the PowerFlex storage for storage requirements. The PowerEdge R640 Nodes are installed with Emulex LPe35002-M2-D 2-Port 32 Gb Fibre Channel Adapter for connectivity from SAN/legacy storage array.
Note: This solution was validated in an engineering lab using PowerFlex HCI platform with a VMware vSphere environment. However, the implementation and validation that this paper describes are applicable for a PowerFlex HCI and two-layer platform with virtualized and bare metal configurations. The protection domain, storage pool, and volumes for the PowerFlex platform can be configured according to requirements. For more information, see PowerFlex Storage definitions.
The Fibre Channel adapter that is installed on the ESXi hosts is configured as Pass-through devices and added to the Oracle Linux VM as a PCI device, such that the volumes that are presented from SAN/Legacy storage array are visible and usable by the VM for storing data.
Note: The HCI Nodes are installed with a 32 Gb Fibre Channel Adapter [Emulex LPe35002-M2-D 2-Port] and the devices are configured as pass through devices for usage by the Virtual Machine which is configured with volumes from PowerMax Storage Array. To add a PCI device directly to a VM, see Add a PCI Device to a Virtual Machine.
For migration of data from SAN volumes to PowerFlex Volumes, the virtual machine has to be set up. These are the changes that needs to be made according to the data or application.
