The INCITS/Fibre Channel (T11) Technical Committee initially envisioned Fabric Notifications being implemented in the data center using a two-phase approach.
PowerMax engineering has decided to take a conservative approach with the initial release of Fabric Notifications on the PowerMax platform. The initial release will focus on Phase 1 and will properly notify customers by logging the notification information. The reason for this is that many enterprise customers initially expressed concerns about automated remediation, particularly around having the storage automatically take actions such as I/O throttling upon receipt of the Fabric Notification. Their primary concern is that they want to understand where the congestion is occurring first and then decide for themselves what actions and policies should be put in place to resolve the congestion. Understanding this concern, it was decided that as the technology is adopted and proliferates, PowerMax engineering will work with the customer base to determine what automation should be taken by the storage array regarding Fabric Notifications.
The following table details what type of Fabric Notifications PowerMaxOS supports with the initial release:
Fabric Notification Type | Supported in PowerMaxOS V10.1 |
Congestion FPIN | Yes |
Peer Congestion FPIN | Yes |
Link Integrity FPIN | Yes |
Delivery Disruption FPIN | Yes |
Congestion Signal Primitives (CSPs) | No (possible enhancement for a future release) |
For the initial release, Fabric Notifications will be received by PowerMaxOS and displayed in Unisphere V10.1, Solutions Enabler V10.1, and CloudIQ.
Note: RESTAPI support will be added in a future release.
