Applications are the focal point of IT and its users. Many applications are deployed using external storage that is accessed via a SAN. Organizationally, companies manage these components in different ways. There may be an Oracle admin who owns the server storage admins who own the external storage and IT who owns the SAN. Each of these administrators have their own focus and perspective. They also may have their own suite of tools to monitor and manage their components. When an application experiences a problem, communication must take place between multiple organizations. These administrators must investigate, often starting with little to go on. The troubleshooting and root cause phase can take quite some time as the various administrators collaborate, gather logs, and correlate all sorts of telemetry through their monitoring tools and fault isolate. Vendors may also be brought in. As you can see, there can be many people involved with an escalation. Coordination of information is challenging. Finger pointing and blame can result.
Fabric Notifications can greatly improve this process through notifications to the end devices. If the end device is PowerMax, the storage administrator will receive information about the event enabling the quick identification of the issue, the ability to zero in on where the issue is originating from, and resolution of the issue in a timely manner. Even though the storage administrator’s usual view and focus may only be PowerMax itself, they are able to be notified on issues happening in the SAN.
