ECS supports the use of external key servers to store top-level key encrypting keys (KEKs). Customers can take advantage of the additional layer of security provided by HSM-based key protection and the latest encryption technology provided by specialized key management servers. In addition, storing top-level key information outside the appliance protects data stored on ECS against loss of the entire appliance.
