This section shows how to prepare the MX740c sleds for the ESXi installation. These steps include configuring the iDRAC network, BOSS card, Perc Mini-Controller, the boot order, and validating firmware.
These steps take place inside the OpenManage Enterprise – Modular Edition web interface.
Configure iDRAC network settings
Manually configure iDRAC onto the network:
- Log in to the OME–Modular web interface.
- Go to Devices > Compute and select a sled to be configured.
- Click Next.
- Click iDRAC Settings > Network.
- Configure the IPv4 settings as follows:
- Type the iDRAC/Management IP address
- Type the Subnet Mask
- Type the Default Gateway
- Type the DNS Server IP address
- When the configuration is completed, open a browser and log in to the iDRAC sled.
- Repeat steps 2 through 6 for each remaining compute sled.
Configure the Dell BOSS card (RAID 1)
Manually configure the data protection (RAID 1) for the Dell BOSS card on each MX740 compute sled:
- Launch the virtual console and select Next Boot to BIOS setup to enter the system BIOS.
- Power cycle the server and enter F2 to open the BIOS setup.
- From the System Setup main menu, select Device Settings.
- Select AHCI Controller in Slot1: BOSS-1 Configuration Utility.
- Select Create RAID Configuration.
- Select both devices and select Next.
- Enter VD_R1_1 as the name and leave the default values.
- Select Yes for Would you like to create this virtual disk?.
- Select Next and then Select OK.
- Select Exit and then Select Yes.
- Select OK and then Select Exit.
- Select System BIOS > Boot Settings > BIOS Boot Settings, and then select Hard-Disk Drive Sequence.
- Select DELLBOSS VD, select + to move, and then select OK.
- Select Back > Back > Finish > Finish, and then select Yes.
- Repeat steps 1 through 9 for each additional edge server.
Verify the BIOS boot order sequence
Verify that the boot order is set correctly in the BIOS on each MX740 compute sled:
- Log in to the iDRAC interface.
- Launch the Virtual Console from the Virtual Console Preview pane.
- Boot the server into BIOS mode by pressing F2 during the boot process.
- Select System BIOS.
- Select BIOS Boot Settings and enter the following settings:
- Boot Mode: BIOS
- Boot Sequence Retry: Enabled
- Hard Disk Failover: Disabled
- Select BIOS Boot Settings and use the following values:

- Click Back > Back > Finish.
- Click Finish again to reboot the server.
