The topic of data protection is much broader than the use of storage snapshots for purposes such as creating database point-in-time copies or database backup copies (storage snapshots that the database can use to perform recovery operations).
Data protection includes many other aspects, such as protection from natural disasters, hardware or software failure, malicious attacks, backup locations and retention, physical security, and more.
For example, it is very common that a backup snapshot copy is mounted to a backup host and from there the data is sent for safekeeping in a backup appliance, such as Data Domain, another site, or cloud storage (for example, S3). Other solutions include remote replication of the database to another location, high-availability clustering, and so on.
Data protection can also cover security aspects, such as data encryption, authorization, authentication, access controls, site security, and more. While these important topics are not in the scope of this paper, the reader is encouraged to familiarize themselves with them and develop an overall data protection strategy for their business-critical applications.
