The scale-out solution requires numerous cables for the internal and storage zones, such as FC and Ethernet connections using rack servers in a fully redundant fabric configuration. The following figure shows a logical view of the minimum network requirements:
The sample landscape consists of four (3+1) R860 servers with 6 TB each of main memory. This landscape offers SAP HANA database sizes from 18 TB of capacity. You can add one or more standby servers to provide for a failover to another node if an error occurs. The database is protected by a PowerMax storage array. In this example, the Dell SAP engineering team used the PowerMax 2500 array.
Each server is equipped with a redundant 25 Gbps or faster Ethernet card and a 16 Gbps or faster FC card. The servers have redundant components to ensure a high uptime for power supplies and BOSS devices. The firmware changes of the components can be centrally managed by OpenManage.
The following figure shows the Dell SAP HANA Scale-out solution using PowerEdge R860 servers:

The entire hardware requirement can fit in two 42U racks and be expanded from three nodes up to 16 nodes. You can add at least one or multiple standby nodes to the landscape to ensure recovery after a component failure.
The following table shows the hardware components of an SAP HANA scale-out (3+1) solution using PowerEdge servers:
Table 5. Dell SAP HANA 18 TB scale-out solution
Component | Configuration |
SAP HANA nodes | 3 x PowerEdge R860 active SAP HANA nodes + 1 to 2 x R860 standby SAP HANA nodes, each of which is equipped with:
|
Storage | Any SAP HANA-certified Dell enterprise storage. See Table 3. |
Storage fabric and network | One pair of 25 GbE network switches and one pair of 16 Gb/s FC switches to support both FC |
Two 25 GbE or quicker network ports are used in each of the PowerEdge R860/R960 servers. The ports are partitioned with specific bandwidth allocation, connected to the fully redundant network switch, and configured as a bonded network. The FC cards are configured with multipath I/O devices to ensure that no single point of failure exists for the connections that an SAP HANA scale-out landscape requires.
The system can grow in increments of one server, starting from a minimum of two servers.
Configure the network cards with a bond and at least three VLANs to the company network (client zone), a separate internal network (internal zone), and the storage network (storage zone). The storage network is used only to provide the shared volume using NFS technology.
The solution uses one Dell PowerSwitch N3248TE-ON switch, two Dell PowerSwitch S5248F-ON network switches, and two Connectrix DS-6620B FC switches
