Certain file types, such as iso, zip, audio, video, and image files, are less compressible by PowerStore and may cause PowerStore to have a lower data reduction rate than expected. With PowerStoreOS S3.5, it is possible to run a service script (svc_get_unreducible_dp_stats) to generate a report that identifies what data may not be reducing as expected. This service script is intended for customers, presales, and engineering teams over SSH in PowerStore’s service container restricted shell.
The report identifies which storage objects at an appliance or volume level are not reducible. The report also identifies:
For an Oracle environment, this report can be helpful in identifying unreducible data stored in either Oracle dba_directories, database files, or external tables.
To generate the report, SSH into a restricted shell of the service account using the IP of the PowerStore appliance and port 26. Then, install and run the service script by entering the following commands:
svc_get_unreducible_dp_stats install
svc_get_unreducible_dp_stats execute
To see a list of existing reports, enter the following:
svc_get_unreducible_dp_stats execute list_results
To display the contents of any of the existing report, enter the Linux cat command on the report file and reference the report file by its absolute path.
Note: The Linux cd command is a restricted command in the shell and cannot be used to cd into the directory that contains the report files.
If there is no need to retain the report file, uninstall the service script svc_get_unreducible_dp_stats. Uninstalling the script also removes the directory /home/service/user/unreducible_dp_stats_script_results and all reports.
Note: Dell Technologies does not recommend using the Linux command rm to remove any of the existing unreducible data reports or the unreducible data report directory.
