FIO (Flexible I/O Tester) is an open-source tool for testing Azure Premium SSD v2 disk performance. FIO facilitates thorough I/O performance analysis on storage systems, enabling the simulation of various I/O workload types with ease. FIO can produce different types of I/O workloads, from sequential reads to random writes, and a mixture of random reads/writes according to user-defined settings.
The following metrics are used to measure the performance of an APEX Block Storage disk:
The FIO workload runs on APEX Block Storage using Standard_F48s_v2 series type VM attached with 20 x Azure Premium SSD v2 disks per each Azure VM.
The following table provides the I/O performance metrics for 100% Random reads and 100% Random writes for I/O block size of 4 KB and 256 KB on per SDS node as well aggregated IOPS and bandwidth for twelve SDS nodes APEX Block Storage.
| IOPS | IOPS (12 nodes) | Bandwidth (MB/s) | Bandwidth (MB/s) (12 nodes) | Response Time (ms) |
4 KB Read | 77,021 | 924,252 | -- | -- | 1.16 |
4 KB Write | 37,113 | 445,356 | -- | -- | 1.56 |
256 KB Read | -- | -- | 1,776 | 21,312 | 3.05 |
256 KB Write | -- | -- | 901 | 10,812 | 3.35 |
Note: these results may differ based on configuration choices such as type of nodes, cluster size, disk type, and network choice and are provided just as a point of reference.
