The Oracle RMAN agent (known as DD Boost for Oracle RMAN in pre-4.0 versions in Data Domain) enables database servers to communicate directly with DD systems in an optimized way, without the need to use the BoostFS file system or a backup application. The Oracle RMAN agent is invoked directly from the Oracle API when the DBA uses RMAN to create database backups. The Oracle RMAN agent uses Application Direct workflows. The RMAN agent is installed on each database server. This RMAN agent contains the DD Boost libraries for communicating with the DD Boost server that runs on the DD system. The Oracle RMAN agent enhances performance while reducing the amount of data that is transferred over the LAN. Multiple database servers, each installed with the Oracle RMAN agent, can use the same storage unit on a DD system as a storage server.
See Chapter 5 for an example of using the Oracle RMAN agent to protect Oracle databases.
