BoostFS provides a general file-system interface to the DD Boost library, allowing standard backup applications to take advantage of DD Boost features. The BoostFS file system is mounted on the application server, offering a standard file system target. The DD software manages objects that are placed in that file system. The software copies the objects to S3 after applying compression and deduplication. The application can take advantage of the storage and network efficiencies of the DD Boost protocol for backup and recovery with direct access to a BoostFS mount point. BoostFS deduplicates the data on the client and only sends unique segments to the DD system. The BoostFS deployment is easy, allowing it to be up and running in few minutes.
The advantages of BoostFS are:
The BoostFS workflow is like NFS and improves backup times compared to NFS and various copy-based solutions. BoostFS supports single-node data systems, HA systems, DDVE, and Extended Distance Protection.
See Chapter 4 for an example of using DD BoostFS to protect PowerFlex volumes on AWS.
