In Bare Metal Orchestrator, there are two ways to move to a newer release: upgrade or migration.
- Upgrade: Involves upgrading from your current cluster version of Bare Metal Orchestrator to a target cluster version. You can upgrade the Bare Metal Orchestrator components from release to release. All components in the Bare Metal Orchestrator cluster are upgraded during the upgrade procedure.
- Migration: Involves migrating all data and resources from your current cluster version of Bare Metal Orchestrator to a target cluster version. The migration procedure involves onboarding brownfield servers to add previously-configured resources that are carrying workloads and services. For more information about the migration procedure, see Migrating Bare Metal Orchestrator data.
To move to a newer release, you must first check to see if there is an upgrade path available from your current Bare Metal Orchestrator cluster version to the target cluster version. If the upgrade path is not available, you can check to see if there is a migration path available from your current cluster version to the target cluster version.
