Cloud Snapshot Manager provides the ability to create application consistent snapshots of AWS EC2 instances.
There are two options to create application consistent snapshots:
VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) is a backup framework for Windows servers and Microsoft applications that allows to back up applications without taking them offline. VSS coordinates the actions that are required to create a consistent snapshot of the application data.
AWS provides the ability to leverage VSS in order to take application consistent snapshots of EBS volumes, including application consistent snapshots of volumes that run Microsoft applications.
Users can create their own custom scripts that can run before and/or after a snapshot is created. The scripts are created as AWS SSM documents that define the actions that AWS performs on your managed instances. CSM invokes these SSM documents during the instances’ snapshot process.
